Field Day Fun

Field Day at HHE was a huge success! While it was really hot, we played it very cool. Our class participated in many events, including Tug of War, Obstacle Course, Over-Under Relay, Jump Rope Relay, and the 80-yard Dash. Our class won the Jump Rope Relay in speedy fashion while our girls running in the 80-yard Dash took second and third places. We're a fast group!

Goal Getters!

Accelerated Reader is a huge part of reading in third grade! Students are able to check-out books from the school library that are perfectly suited for them. The books are leveled based on fluency and interest Each quarter, students are assigned a point goal to work towards before the end of the grading period. The point goal is based on the students reading for 30 minutes each day. They are also expected to maintain an 85% average score on the comprehension tests.

At the conclusion of the first quarter, two students had met their point goals and maintained an 85% average or higher. Alexa and Andres read tons of books. Andres actually earned 30 points!

Congratulations! I am looking forward to even more students meeting their reading goals at the end of the second quarter.

Citizenship - Kid of Character

Congratulations to Alexa! She was elected our classroom Kid of Character for the month of November. Citizenship has been our recent focus. Alexa exhibits excellent character in our classroom and school community. She is a responsible student who takes pride in completing her assignments on time and doing them well. She also shows great support and encouragement to her classmates. We are so proud of Alexa!

Who are these turkeys?

Honors Assembly

This morning, the third graders enjoyed an opportunity to praise and honor their peers who earned A Honor Roll, A and B Honor Roll, and Citizenship Awards for the first quarter. It was an awesome time to celebrate the hard work and dedication these students demonstrated. It was also an excellent time for those students who did not earn an award to set goals for next quarter. We have our eyes set on a class sweep of the stage!

Campaign Corner

Campaigning is officially complete for national, state, and local candidates (insert sigh of relief). However, while the action was in full swing, our class was learning about the three branches of government and the election process. Our classroom was transformed into "Campaign Corner." Students were introduced to the presidential nominees, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, through an article in Time for Kids. After reading about their many accomplishments and ideas for the future of our country, we continued our research using informational websites like Scholastic to learn more about them. Then, we created charts to compare and contrast the nominees. Many students held strong opinions about the nominees, but were surprised to learn about their views on important national issues like education, defense, healthcare, and taxes. Like most Americans, many students shifted their support from one nominee to the other in the final days. We made campaign posters that shared at least one specific policy promise along with some well-known slogans, and hung them in the hallway. Finally, all of our work and research led us to Election Day. Each voter was given a ballot, secret of course, and then put the ballot in the ballot box.

When the votes were tallied, Miss Walker's class agreed with the national electorate. Our election was a microcosm of the national effort with 10 votes for Donald Trump and 8 for Hillary Clinton.

Congratulations, President-elect Donald Trump!

Spooky STEM

STEM is a big deal with for the third graders at HHE. They are preparing for their futures by participating in activities that focus on science, technology, engineering, and math. All of these things together added up to some spooky STEM fun on Halloween!

Ms. Charloff's class joined us for our project. We looked at some amazing architectural examples of towers that have been built around the world. We noticed one thing: the bases of the towers were always wider than the tops. Sometimes, the tops of the towers were simply rods or poles. So, it got us to thinking about the engineering that goes into building a tower that will stand firm under any condition. Working in small groups, we discussed our thoughts and made some notes in our Spooky STEM journals. Then, we were charged with building a tower using toothpicks, candy corn, and candy corn pumpkins. Seems easy enough, right? Well, the tower had to stand. Ugh. Does it count if it stands for 2 seconds?

We made a plan which consisted of many of our groups using the pumpkins to form the base. After hard work (and many failures), we had a better of understanding and appreciation for engineers and builders. And, unlike them, we got to eat our building materials. :)

Responsible Kid of Character

Our "Kid of Character" for the month of October is Kaia! The focus trait for October was responsibility. Being a third grader means being responsible for your education - classwork, homework, reading practice, math practice, etc. Kaia was voted as most responsible by her classmates because she demonstrates these practices every day! She is an excellent example for her peers.

Figurative language is a piece of cake!

Figurative language is a powerful tool that third graders are learning to use to make their conversations and writing more interesting and fun. Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation, or actual words. Often, it is meant to provide mental pictures for the reader or listener and describes something by comparing it to something else. It includes idioms, metaphors, and similes. For example, our study of figurative language has caused us to hit the books. And, we've discovered that figurative language is a piece of cake!

Cooperative Kid of Character

Our "Kid of Character" for the month of September is Sophie! The focus trait for this month is cooperation. Sophie is an outstanding example of cooperation. She works very well with her classmates on assignments and group projects. She is always ready to help those in need, too. Sophie's classmates are so happy to share their learning journeys with her!

We Have Sense...Number Sense!

As we embark on our learning discovery in Chapter 2 of Go Math!, we are learning to use various strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Students have practiced adding using a number line, estimation, and the break-apart method. Students are encouraged to use the strategy with which they are most successful. However, they will still need to have a basic understanding of the other strategies...just in case they ever need it.

Have your student explain each method to you while answering an addition problem. They have a lot of sense...number sense, that is. :)

Wodney Wins!

Our days begin with a "morning meeting" which includes conversation and listening to a good book. On Fridays, students can reflect on the books we read and vote for his or her favorite for the week. The selection for the month of August proved to be decisive! The winner was Hooway for Wodney Wat by Helen Lester.

The plot follows the quiet life of Rodney Rat who is plagued with the inability to pronounce the letter "r." One afternoon, he is chosen by his teacher to be the leader for Simon Says. Surprisingly, his speech problem solves a bigger problem named Camilla Capybara who is the class show-off. While Rodney's friends understand his words because they know him, Camilla takes his directions literally. Rodney says, "Go west." Camilla stomps off into the sunset while Rodney and his classmates take a nice long rest...from the game and Camilla. Hooway for Wodney Wat!
