Cooperative Kid of Character

Our "Kid of Character" for the month of September is Sophie! The focus trait for this month is cooperation. Sophie is an outstanding example of cooperation. She works very well with her classmates on assignments and group projects. She is always ready to help those in need, too. Sophie's classmates are so happy to share their learning journeys with her!

We Have Sense...Number Sense!

As we embark on our learning discovery in Chapter 2 of Go Math!, we are learning to use various strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Students have practiced adding using a number line, estimation, and the break-apart method. Students are encouraged to use the strategy with which they are most successful. However, they will still need to have a basic understanding of the other strategies...just in case they ever need it.

Have your student explain each method to you while answering an addition problem. They have a lot of sense...number sense, that is. :)

Wodney Wins!

Our days begin with a "morning meeting" which includes conversation and listening to a good book. On Fridays, students can reflect on the books we read and vote for his or her favorite for the week. The selection for the month of August proved to be decisive! The winner was Hooway for Wodney Wat by Helen Lester.

The plot follows the quiet life of Rodney Rat who is plagued with the inability to pronounce the letter "r." One afternoon, he is chosen by his teacher to be the leader for Simon Says. Surprisingly, his speech problem solves a bigger problem named Camilla Capybara who is the class show-off. While Rodney's friends understand his words because they know him, Camilla takes his directions literally. Rodney says, "Go west." Camilla stomps off into the sunset while Rodney and his classmates take a nice long rest...from the game and Camilla. Hooway for Wodney Wat!
